A. PURPOSE OF SIMILARITY CHECKING

Similarity screening is used as an editorial tool to assist in identifying textual overlap between a submitted manuscript and previously available sources.

The purpose of this process is to support the assessment of originality, appropriate citation, responsible paraphrasing, text recycling, duplicate publication, and other matters related to scholarly integrity.

B. WHEN SIMILARITY CHECKS MAY BE CONDUCTED

Initial Editorial Screening

A manuscript may be screened before it is forwarded to external peer reviewers.

Before or During Peer Review

Additional screening may be conducted if concerns regarding originality or source attribution arise during editorial processing.

After Major Revision

Revised manuscripts may be screened again where substantial changes have been made.

Before Acceptance or Publication

The Editorial Team may conduct a final originality check before a manuscript proceeds to publication.

C. INTERPRETATION OF SIMILARITY REPORTS

Similarity Percentage Is Not the Sole Criterion

JIMB does not evaluate manuscript originality solely on the basis of a numerical similarity percentage. A similarity score must be interpreted together with the sources of overlap, the context of the matched text, the extent and distribution of similarities, citation practices, and the nature of the material identified in the report.

D. LEGITIMATE TEXTUAL SIMILARITY

Certain types of textual overlap may be academically legitimate when appropriately used and attributed. Examples may include:

  • Properly quoted and cited material;
  • Reference lists and bibliographic information;
  • Common academic terminology and established technical expressions;
  • Names of institutions, regulations, instruments, theories, or standardized concepts;
  • Standard methodological descriptions where alternative wording is limited;
  • Unavoidable similarities in terminology or commonly accepted research procedures.

E. UNACCEPTABLE SIMILARITY

The Editorial Team may consider textual overlap unacceptable when it indicates practices such as:

  • Direct copying of text without appropriate quotation or citation;
  • Paraphrasing that remains substantially identical to the original source without proper acknowledgement;
  • Plagiarism of ideas, arguments, data, figures, tables, or other scholarly material;
  • Duplicate or redundant publication;
  • Inappropriate reuse of substantial portions of an author's previously published work;
  • Text recycling that may mislead readers regarding the originality of the manuscript.

F. TEXT RECYCLING AND SELF-PLAGIARISM

Authors should avoid reusing substantial portions of their previously published text without appropriate citation, disclosure, or justification. Where earlier work is relevant, authors should clearly distinguish previously published material from the new contribution presented in the submitted manuscript.

G. EDITORIAL ACTION

The Editorial Team determines the appropriate action based on the nature and seriousness of the identified similarity. Possible actions may include:

Proceed
No significant originality concern identified
Request Revision
Authors may be asked to revise overlapping text
Further Evaluation
Additional editorial assessment may be required
Reject
Serious plagiarism or publication misconduct

H. AUTHOR RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Authors are responsible for ensuring the originality of their manuscripts.
  • All ideas, text, data, figures, tables, and other materials obtained from other sources must be appropriately acknowledged.
  • Direct quotations should be clearly identified and cited.
  • Paraphrased material must be written genuinely in the author's own language and properly referenced.
  • Authors should carefully review the manuscript before submission for unintended textual overlap.
  • Authors must cooperate with editorial requests concerning similarity or originality concerns.

I. POST-PUBLICATION CONCERNS

If plagiarism or significant inappropriate textual overlap is identified after publication, JIMB may investigate the matter and take appropriate editorial action in accordance with its Publication Ethics and Retraction, Correction, and Withdrawal Policy.
