The development of information and communication technology (ICT) has reshaped patterns of social interaction within families, particularly in parent–child relationships. This study examines the influence of smartphone use and digital media on communication dynamics, emotional closeness, and parenting practices in Amahusu Village, Ambon City. Using a qualitative approach, the study involved 20 informants 10 parents and 10 children selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, observation, and documentation, and analyzed using the Miles and Huberman interactive model. The findings reveal that ICT exerts an ambivalent impact on family life. On the one hand, digital technology facilitates communication, enhances access to information, and supports children’s learning. On the other hand, excessive smartphone use reduces face-to-face interaction, increases the risk of digital dependency, and contributes to family conflict. Although parents generally recognize the benefits of ICT, most lack consistent digital parenting strategies and rely primarily on restrictive approaches. This study highlights the importance of strengthening family digital literacy and developing balanced digital parenting practices. The findings contribute to discussions on digital inclusion, family education, and culturally grounded social development.
